About the Gunks

The area known as the Gunks is located 90 miles north and west of New York City in the Hudson River valley near the village of New Paltz. The Mohonk Preserve manages over six thousand acres of wilderness land which are home to the majority of the rock formations known as the Gunks.

The rock found here is exquisite in quality and beauty. There are some 1000 rock climbing routes in the Gunks. The quality, the diversity, and the ease of access makes the Gunks our favorite place to experience Rock Climbing. One visit to this area and you may find yourself in love.

There is much more to the Gunks than just excellent rock for climbing. The expansive parklands of the Mohonk Preserve offer miles of backcountry for hiking, finding quietude, even an extensive network of carriage trails for mountain biking. The area is also home to: great farmers markets and restaurants, boutique shopping in New Paltz, and a luxury mountain retreat that is not to be missed known as the Mohonk Mountain House. There is a lot to see and do in this area besides climbing for your friends and family members who come to visit the Gunks.
