The area known as the Gunks is located 90 miles north and west of New York City in the Hudson River valley near the village of New Paltz. The Mohonk Preserve manages over six thousand acres of wilderness land which are home to the majority of the rock formations known as the Gunks.
There is much more to the Gunks than just excellent rock for climbing. The expansive parklands of the Mohonk Preserve offer miles of backcountry for hiking, finding quietude, even an extensive network of carriage trails for mountain biking. The area is also home to: great farmers markets and restaurants, boutique shopping in New Paltz, and a luxury mountain retreat that is not to be missed known as the Mohonk Mountain House. There is a lot to see and do in this area besides climbing for your friends and family members who come to visit the Gunks. |
